When It Happens to You
A Practical Guide Through Breast Cancer
Two breast cancer survivors, one a doctor, the other a writer and school teacher, found that their individual experiences with breast cancer and its treatment could contain information and insights other women would find important and useful in facing the disease. Earlene Dal Pozzo and Joann Dilts both come from medical families and are both healthcare professionals. They know the ins and outs of the medical systems, yet they each struggled at times to maintain control of their treatments. They wrote this book to share their experiences and insights with others and to provide the kind of information and support they wish they had when they were each trying to cope with the illness. A combination of insight and information based on experience and research leads to practical suggestions on dealing with others (especially family and friends) as well as guidance through the medical details in helpful and understandable terms. Each chapter ends with a checklist of key elements to remember. Treatments are explored as options, not fixed solutions, and the serious aspects of surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy are examined as personal experiences, not just medical events. The practical and useful nature of this slim volume does not overwhelm the personal and honest core which shines through in the frank experiences these two remarkable women share with you.
